I just like the idea of figure 8, of figure skaters trying to make this self-contained perfect thing that takes a lot of effort but essentially goes nowhere. E. Smith.

realization #23412314

When a film goes beyond twenty or so minutes the three-act structure kicks in, and with it, a solution to the conflict.
The solution should provide meaning, and the meaning is usually simple. Even in a complicated film, say, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the story asks, “Will the boy find the girl?  Will he reunite with his true love, crazy as she is?”  And if he doesn’t is it better to have loved and lost? And what about love?  If gained, can it be fully lost?  Or does it become the whole person, so that to end love you must end the lover.

… But I wonder if we’re missing something obvious.  If the situation is asking an obvious question…

it’s frustrating because it seems so simple. and i only just started thinking about this yesterday. come on, it’s just one question. ONE QUESTION. one question. but it’s not.
